How to get a model name & API key

Registered accounts need your own AI provider credentials. Use a model ID (not your email) and a secret API key from one of the providers below.

You need paid credits — not just an API key

Creating an API key is only the first step. Stud will not work unless your chosen provider has billing enabled and enough credits or balance to run the model you select.

Before you start, open that provider's pricing page (linked on each card below). Costs vary widely by model — a fast/cheap model is usually best for Mediquest, Study, and Quiz.

How Stud stores your key

If you choose to save your API key, it is encrypted on our server before storage. You can also use a key for one session only without saving it.

  1. Sign in at platform.openai.com.
  2. Open API keys in the left sidebar (Settings → API keys).
  3. Click Create new secret key and copy it immediately — you will not see it again.
  4. Add billing and purchase credits (or set up prepaid balance) — a key alone is not enough without paid usage.
  5. Check current pricing at openai.com/api/pricing before choosing a model.
  6. Use a model name like gpt-4o-mini in Stud.

  1. Go to Google AI Studio (aistudio.google.com).
  2. Click Get API key in the left menu.
  3. Create a key for your Google Cloud project and copy it.
  4. Enable billing on your Google Cloud project — free tiers are limited; paid usage requires credits/billing.
  5. Review Gemini API pricing on ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/pricing for your chosen model.
  6. Use a model name like gemini-2.0-flash in Stud.

  1. Create an account at console.anthropic.com.
  2. Open API Keys and create a new key.
  3. Copy the key and store it somewhere safe.
  4. Add a payment method and purchase credits — Anthropic bills per token usage; your key will not work without available credit.
  5. Compare model costs at anthropic.com/pricing before you pick a model.
  6. Use a model name like claude-3-5-sonnet-latest, or an OpenRouter ID anthropic/claude-3.5-sonnet.

  5. Each model has its own price on openrouter.ai/models; filter by cost before you choose.
  6. Use the full model slug from openrouter.ai/models (provider/model-name).
